UNO Alumni Association

The UNO Alumni Association is an independent, nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving the University of Nebraska at Omaha and its alumni. It was founded June 6, 1913, by the Class of 1913.

Every UNO student automatically becomes a member of the UNO Alumni Association upon graduating from the university. There are no dues to join. Since its founding in 1908 the university has graduated more than 95,000 alumni. More than 80,000 of these are still alive.

Governed by a 28-member board of directors, the Association advances UNO through various outreach programs, diverse generational programming, extensive communications and fundraising.

Programs range from newborn recognition of “Future Alums,” to networking/professional growth opportunities in the Young Alumni Academy, to educational luncheons for Golden Circle graduates of 45 years ago and longer. The Association also stages on- and off-campus family-oriented events throughout the year and connects the campus to alumni throughout the country at “Mavs on the Move” events. The Association also interacts regularly with students, most notably by hosting and organizing grad fairs preceding each commencement and by participating in Welcome Week activities each fall.

Recognition is given to alumni, faculty, staff and students through a diverse awards program. Since 1983 the Association also has issued nearly $1 million through 12 annual professorships that support excellence in teaching.

The Association produces the university’s flagship publication, UNO Magazine, sent free to all graduates and to community leaders, businesses and others. It facilitates other communication with and among alumni via its website, e-mails and several popular social media initiatives.

The annual Chancellor’s Scholarship Swing, an annual event that has raised nearly $600,000 for scholarships since 1995, supports several scholarship programs. Thousands of alumni also contribute to the UNO Annual Fund, established in 1953 and totaling more than $10 million since then.

Members who contribute to the Annual Fund receive a validated UNO Alumni Card that confers various discounts and benefits. These include: check-out privileges at Criss Library; discounts on rental fees at the Thompson Alumni Center; 2-for-1 ticket offers to select home UNO athletics events; the opportunity to purchase a HPER membership; enrollment in the UNO Child Care Center; discounts at the UNO Bookstore, UNO Outdoor Venture Center and UNO Aviation Institute; and reduced rates at the Omaha Marriott.

Travel programs, insurance coverage and low-interest credit also are available to all alumni through corporate partnerships that generate funding for the Association.

The Association also owns and operates the William H. & Dorothy Thompson Alumni Center, one of Omaha’s most popular banquet facilities and conference centers. It has hosted more than 1,000 weddings and/or receptions and is booked regularly by local companies and other entities for a variety of events. The Association provides space in facility free to campus groups conducting University business.
