Pre-Landscape Architecture - Preprofessional Program

The landscape architecture program is a five-year course of study that is subdivided into three phases:

  • two years of pre-professional courses of study;
  • two years of para-professional courses of study; and
  • one year of professional courses of study.

In addition to the university’s general education requirements, students are required to take a variety of courses including horticulture, architecture, planning, engineering and core landscape architecture classes. The curriculum is designed to support the core studio sequence and introduce students to issues facing the landscape architecture profession such as plant materials, soils, landscape ecology, construction, drainage, site circulation, and urbanism.

Upon successful completion of the pre-professional and para-professional phases, a bachelor of science in design (BSD) is awarded. Students may then apply for admission to the professional phase of the curriculum. Before admission into the professional phase, an evaluation of the student’s academic record and a review of work completed during the pre-professional phase will be conducted. Upon successful completion of the professional segment, a professional bachelor of landscape architecture (BLA) is awarded.

The study of landscape architecture at UNO is limited to the four-semester, pre-landscape program due to the highly structured professional program already in place on the UNL campus. The sequence of course work offered at UNO is as follows:

Required courses for the third through fifth years are not available on the UNO campus. Students wishing to pursue the professional program in landscape architecture must apply for admission to and transfer to UNL at the end of the second year. A minimum of 59-61 semester credit hours and the completion of the pre-landscape architecture program is required for admission to the UNL landscape architecture program.

Accreditation for the landscape architecture program with the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB) is currently pending. Accreditation will be granted for all students once it is granted under the rules of accreditation set by the LAAB.
