Bachelor of General Studies with a Concentration in Political Science

The Division of Continuing Studies offers the Bachelor of General Studies degree with an area of concentration in political science.  Students interested in this degree program must meet with an adviser in the Division of Continuing Studies.  The major consists of a minimum of 30 credit hours in political science.  B.G.S. requirements are as follows:

Required Courses:

  • Remaining hours in political science shall be selected by students in accordance with their interests.
  • At least nine hours of upper-division courses must be taken at the 3000 and 4000 levels.

Recommended Courses (for students planning to pursue advanced study):

  • PSCI 2000 (or an equivalent social science research methods or statistics course).
  • At least one three-hour course in American Politics such as PSCI 2110, 2120, 2180, 3010, 3040, 3050, 3100, 3120, 3130, 3140, 3150, 3160, 3170, 3180, 4030, 4040, 4050, 4110, 4120, 4170, 4180, or 4190.
  • At least one three-hour course in Comparative Politics such as PSCI 2500*, 2560, 2660, 3500, 3560, 3580, 3640, 3660, 3680, 3700, 4350, 4500, 4520, or 4620.
  • At least one three-hour course in International Politics such as PSCI 2210*, 3220, 3230, 3260, 4200, 4210, 4240, 4250, or 4280.
  • At least one three-hour course in Political Theory such as PSCI 2310*, 3340, 4310, 4320, 4330, or 4340.

* On-line Availability:  PSCI 1000, 1100, 2210, 2310, and 2500 are offered on-line at least once per year.  Additional courses are offered on-line regularly.

Allied Field

An allied field of 1-9 hours may be taken in ONE of the following departments as part of the 30 hours in the area of concentration:  criminal justice, economics, history, or sociology
