Pre-Physician Assistant Curriculum
Pre-physician assistant students must complete a bachelor’s degree, as well as the requirements below, before making application to the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Physician Assistant program. When choosing a major to complement the pre-physician assistant curriculum, applicants are encouraged to explore areas of personal interest. This may vary from a thorough investigation of the natural sciences to the social sciences and humanities. In view of the rapidly broadening scope of medicine, a well-rounded education is considered optimum preparation. Union College in Lincoln, NE also has a physician assistant program. The GRE is required. Minimum cumulative GPA required for application is 3.0.
No grade below C will be accepted.
Biological Sciences (16 credit hours minimum)
BIOL 1450 Biology I 5 credits
BIOL 2440 The Biology of Microorganisms 4 credits
BIOL 2740 & 2840 Human Physiology & Anatomy I & II 4 credits each
In addition to the above courses, the following are also recommended:
BIOL 3240 Introduction to Immunology (strongly rec.) 3 credits
BIOL 3830 Biology of Pathogenic Microorganisms 3 credits
Chemistry (16 credit hours minimum)
CHEM 1180* & 1184 General Chemistry I & Lab 4 credits
CHEM 1190 & 1194 General Chemistry II & Lab 4 credits
CHEM 2250** Organic Chemistry I 3 credits
CHEM 2260 & 2274** Organic Chemistry II & Lab 5 credits
CHEM 3650 & 3654 Fundamentals of Biochemistry & Lab 4 credits
*Requires Math 1310 or placement beyond, plus CHEM 1140 & 1144 or placement beyond as pre-requisites.
**In lieu of Chem 2250, 2260 & 2274, Chem 2210 & 2214 can be taken to fulfill UNMC’s organic chem
requirement, but the sequence as outlined above is preferred.

Psychology (9 credit hours minimum)

PSYC 2500 Life Span Psychology 3 credits
OR an upper division psychology course
It is recommended that additional courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics, and psychology beyond the required minimums be taken, prior to application.
