The Dr. C.C. and Mabel L. Criss Library

The recently remodeled Criss Library is centrally located on the UNO campus, and offers services and facilities for study, teaching, collaboration and research.


Collaborative spaces include; high-tech group study rooms equipped with wide-screen monitors and whiteboards; three classroom labs; a new flexible iClassroom lab featuring 40 dual-boot MacBook Pro laptops, Apple TV, theater seating to accommodate over 40 participants, HD projection on a 120” screen and surround sound; graduate study carrels and individual study rooms.


Additional amenities include: a beautiful outdoor garden patio; café; theater room equipped with a Blu-ray disc player, surround sound, HD projector, 110 in. screen, cable TV, iPod docking station, and PC; the H. Don and Connie Osborne Art Gallery; new Creative Production Lab complete with 3D printing, laser cutter, top-of-the-line video and audio editing software,  poster-size scanner and printer, graphic design software, HD camcorders and wireless microphones, green screen, whisper booth, and numerous software choices for multi-media production.


The library’s collection encompasses over 800,000 print volumes; 460,000 E-books; 62,000 journal and newspaper subscriptions; 450,000 government documents; and media in DVD, CD and online streaming formats. As a partial government documents depository, the Criss Library collects federal and Nebraska state publications. Material not available in the Criss Library collection can be borrowed from other libraries via the Interlibrary Loan system ILLIAD.


The library’s collection is on open shelves and is arranged according to the Library of Congress classification system. The library’s newly improved Archives & Special Collections space has been updated to include more space and adjustable seating arrangements for individual or large group visits. Included in the department are thousands of pieces of UNO memorabilia dating back to the university’s earliest years as well as the U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel Archive’s, the Arthur Paul Afghanistan Collection, rare books, and other special collections.


The Library’s holdings are accessible through the library’s website. UNO students, faculty and staff may check out materials with their UNO ID card at any of the four University of Nebraska campuses as well as 41 other Nebraska college and university libraries. Additional media items available for checkout are: video cameras, tripods, audio recorders, laptops, Kindles and iPads.


Assistance is available to help students and faculty utilize the collection. Reference librarians are available via text messaging, chat, phone, email, and face-to-face to answer questions and assist with research. In addition, librarians are available to teach classes on the use of the library.


Criss Library is open 98 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. Slightly shorter hours are observed during the summer and intercessions. Copiers, printers, scanners, and nearly 200 computers are available for student use on the first and second floors of the library, group study rooms and four classrooms.
